Co-op Design Principles

Digital design principles from the UK Co-operative Group, guiding how they build services that are useful, honest, and accessible to all.

  1. We design in context

Communicate with a clear voice at the right time. Understand the whole user experience, not just the digital part, and give information only when needed.

  2. We design with purpose

Know why a service is needed before building it. Get out of the way and help users achieve their goals as quickly as possible.

  3. We design for everyone

Communicate simply and remove barriers. Design for people regardless of background, circumstance, or digital skills.

  4. We design with honesty

Be truthful about what you can and cannot do. Talk about what you’ve done, not what you’ve yet to do.

  5. We design in the open

Share what you’re making as you make it. Be generous with knowledge and open to learning from others.

  6. We design iteratively

Release earlier and learn faster. Make decisions based on evidence from what people actually do, not what they say.
