Photon Design Principles

Six principles guiding Firefox's Photon design system, balancing speed and adaptability with a friendly, supportive character.

  1. Adaptable

Work across different platforms, screen sizes, and contexts. Respect each environment’s conventions while maintaining Firefox’s identity.

  2. Quick

Feel fast and responsive. Minimise perceived wait times and ensure interactions feel immediate and fluid.

  3. Aware

Understand context and anticipate needs. Provide relevant information and options based on what the user is doing.

  4. Approachable

Feel welcoming and easy to use for everyone. Avoid jargon and make features discoverable without overwhelming new users.

  5. Supportive

Help users accomplish their goals. Provide guidance when needed and recover gracefully from errors.

  6. Whimsical

Include moments of delight and personality. A browser can be serious about privacy while still feeling human and warm.
